Wolf Brother

Wolf Brother is a 2004 young adult novel by British writer Michelle Paver. The first installment in Paver’s Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, Wolf Brother is set in the Stone Age. It follows twelve-year-old Torak and his wolf-cub companion on their quest to fulfill the dying wish of Torak’s father.

As the novel opens, Torak is tending to his badly-injured father, Fa. Fa has been attacked by an unnaturally ferocious bear, "possessed...[by] some demon from the Otherworld." Fearing he is dying, Fa passes on some final instructions: Torak must journey north to find the Mountain of the World Spirit. There he must ask the World Spirit to help him destroy the bear, otherwise, the bear will kill all life in the forest. On his journey, Fa tells him, Torak will find a “guide,” but he must avoid other people at all costs. Before Fa can explain further, the bear returns, and Torak must flee for his life.

Heading north, Torak comes across a wolf cub, orphaned when its pack was drowned by floodwater. Torak communicates with the young wolf, and the two form a pack. Wolf agrees to guide Torak to the Mountain of the World Spirit. Torak fashions a dog whistle, inaudible to humans, which he can use to summon Wolf.



Torak hunts, killing a roebuck for food, and as a result, comes into conflict with the Raven Clan. Three Raven hunters, Renn, her brother Hord, and Oslak, capture him,  accusing Torak of stealing their buck. They take him to Fin-Kedinn, the leader of the Raven Clan, for judgment.

Torak is offered the chance to prove his innocence by dueling Hord. He defeats Hord by tipping a pot of broth onto a fire: the rising steam blinds his opponent. Fin-Kedinn and Saeunn, the Mage of the Raven Clan, hail Torak as the “Listener” foretold in a clan prophecy. The prophecy describes the Listener as someone who “talks with silence”—Torak’s dog whistle—and “fights with air” (the blinding steam).

The prophecy goes on to foretell that the Listener will “offer his heart’s blood” to the World Spirit in order to destroy the demonic bear. The various members of the Raven Clan have differing interpretations of this prophecy: some believe that it simply means Torak must go to the Mountain of the World Spirit, while others believe he must be sacrificed on the spot, and his blood taken to the Mountain.



One of those who believes Torak must go to the Mountain alive is Renn. She helps Torak to escape, accompanying him on his journey. On the way, she tells him the rest of the Raven Clan prophecy: the Listener must find the three parts of the “Nanuak” in order to convince the World Spirit to save the forest from the bear.

Torak, Renn, and Wolf overcome a series of obstacles as they search for the Nanuak, including an attack by The Walker, an insane outcast, whom they must outwit.

They find the first part of the Nanuak when Torak falls into a river. The second is hidden in a cave, and the third among the dangerous pitfalls of the Ice River, which they must cross on their way to the High Mountains.



Just as they reach the Mountain of the World Spirit, Renn and Torak are captured by Renn’s brother Hord and taken to the camp of the Raven Clan, who have been in pursuit of Torak since his escape. However, Fin-Kedinn, convinced that Torak should go to the Mountain alive, releases him. He reveals to Torak that at the time of his death, Torak’s father had been engaged in a quest to defeat the Soul Eaters, a gang of renegade mages using evil magic to take over the forest. Fin-Kedinn believes the Soul Eaters created the demonic bear to kill Torak’s father. He hopes that it is Torak’s destiny to defeat them.

Torak and Wolf begin their ascent of the Mountain, pursued by the bear, which is drawn by the potency of the Nanuak. As they climb, they are attacked again by Hord, who has a guilty secret: he helped the Soul Eaters to create the bear. As a result, he believes it is his duty to take the Nanuak to the World Spirit. Trapped between Hord and the Bear, Torak realizes that his “heart’s blood” is Wolf, and he gives the Nanuak to his companion. An avalanche sweeps away Hord and the bear. Torak retrieves the Nanuak and delivers it to the World Spirit. Torak hears Wolf howling together with other wolves, and he promises to return before he sets off down the mountain alone.

Described as “involving” by Publisher’s Weekly, Wolf Brother set the stage for a further five volumes in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, which wrapped up in 2009 with Ghost Hunter.
